Medicolegal Death Investigation (English Version) - Syllabus

Term: Six weeks in total; one Class per Week + Self-Study Material

Study Hours: Students should spend an average of 20 hours (classes and assessments) for course completion.


A review of medicolegal death investigation and its role in the justice system and public health. This class focuses on the importance of identification of the deceased and communication with family members. These goals are met by understanding field and morgue duties, relationships with law enforcement, hospitals, emergency services, organ procurement organizations, and funeral service providers. Also discussed are medical/anatomical terminology, common medicines, medical procedures (particularly emergency medical intervention), and taphonomy.


This course is perfect for any Medical Examiner’s Investigator (MEI), Coroner’s Investigator, law enforcement professional related and/or individuals who, due to his/her daily labor, can become first responders to the scene of a death. This course will include fundamental information needed for these professionals can respond as efficiently and effectively as possible.


Students will have access each week to one lesson and self-study material related to the class topic. Within the week the lesson is available, the students have to watch the video/s related to the week’s lesson and also answer a 5 questions quiz related to the topics learned during that week. These questions will be graded and will be part of the student final grade.

In the last week of the course, it will be available a final exam consisting of a 15 questions quiz, which will be also part of the student final score. A certificate of approval is issued to students that successfully complete the course with a score equal or over 60%.


This course will provide you with the ability to:

  • Identify the types of deaths that require a medicolegal death investigation
  • Implement effective scene response to aid in the determination of cause and manner of death
  • Facilitate communication with outside agencies, witnesses, and family members
  • Identify and interpret common postmortem changes and medical intervention artifacts
  • Incorporate various specialists that can aid investigation including entomology, anthropology, and microbiology

Return Policy 

In the exceptional case of and for reasons that go beyond True Forensic Science’s control, it is necessary to suspend a programed Service, all the users who have paid the registration fee of it (with or without discount coupon) will be refund for the same amount they paid. Users who are making payment in monthly installments, will be refund for the amount accumulated up to the moment of the course cancellation notice and the remaining pending installments will be canceled.   

In the event that the user requests the cancellation of his/her participation before the Service begins, TFS Academy reserves the right to refund the payment made and it will be analyzed case by case. There will be no refunds after the course has begun.  

Using Our Services 

Our Services are targeted to specific audiences, so sometimes additional terms or product requirements (including age requirements) may apply. Whenever additional terms apply, those additional terms become part of your agreement with us if you use those Services.

You must follow any policies made available to you within the Services.

You may use our Services only as permitted by law. We may suspend or stop providing our Services to you if you do not comply with our terms or policies or if we are investigating suspected misconduct.

Using our Services does not give you ownership of, or rights to any intellectual property in our Services or the content you access. You may not use content from our Services for purposes other than satisfying your own training goals. These terms do not grant you the right to use any branding or logos used in our Services without prior written consent from the TFS. Do not remove, obscure, or alter any legal notices displayed in or along with our Services.

 In connection with your use of the Services, we may send you service announcements, administrative messages, and other information.

TFS will send a certificate of approval/participation, after finished the Service and verified the full payment of the registration fee, to the users duly registered in our virtual platform and that have fulfil all the exigencies of it. TFS will send the certificate using the personal information provided by the user, therefore, the USER is responsible for the veracity of that information given at the registration and/or throughout the Service. In the case of the user chooses the payment option of monthly installments, TFS will send the certificate once the payment of the last installment has been verified in our internal system.

Your TFS Academy Account 

You may need a TFS Academy Online Training Account in order to use some of our Services. TFS will provide user credentials and monitor use and access.

Privacy and Copyright Protection 

We do not share personal information with companies, organizations, and/or individuals outside of TFS unless we have a good-faith belief that access, use, preservation or disclosure of the information is reasonably necessary to:

            · Meet any applicable law, regulation, legal process or enforceable governmental request;

            · Enforce applicable Terms of Service, including investigation of potential violations; 

            · Detect, prevent, or otherwise address fraud, security, or technical issues; and 

            · Protect against harm to rights, property or safety of TFS, our users, or the public as required or 
permitted by law. 

TFS reserves the right to eliminate accounts of recidivist infringers to the copyright and intellectual property law.

Warranties and Disclaimers 

We provide our Services using a commercially reasonable level of skill and care but there are certain things we don’t promise about our Services.

 Other than as set out in these terms or additional terms, neither TFS nor its suppliers make specific promises about the services. We do not make any commitments about the content’s ability to meet your needs. We provide the services “as is.”

To the extent permitted by law, TFS excludes all implied warranties that allows the adequacy of the content for particular purposes.

Liability for Services 

TFS will not be responsible for lost profits, revenues, data, financial losses, or punitive damages.

To the extent permitted by law, the total liability of TFS for any claim under these terms, including for any implied warranties, is limited to the amount you paid us to use the services (or, if we choose, to supplying you the services again).

In all cases, TFS will not be liable for any loss or damage that is not reasonably foreseeable.

Business Uses of Our Services 

If you are using our Services on behalf of a business, that business accepts these terms. It will hold harmless and indemnify TFS, its officers, agents, and employees from any claim, suit or action arising from or related to the use of the Services or violation of these terms, including any liability or expense arising from claims, losses, damages, suits, judgments, litigation costs, and/or attorney’s fees.

About These Terms 

We may modify these terms or any additional terms that apply to a Service, for example, to reflect changes to the law or changes to our Services. Changes will not apply retroactively and will become effective when posted.

These terms control the relationship between the TFS and you, the user. They do not create any third-party beneficiary rights. If you do not comply with these terms, and we don’t take action right away, this does not mean that we are giving up any rights that we may have (such as taking action in the future).

If it turns out that a particular term is not enforceable, this will not affect any other terms.

The laws of the State of Hawaii, U.S.A. will apply to any disputes arising out of or relating to these terms or the Services.
